A first blog post, particularly for someone unaccustomed in running their own site, feels big. It feels like a act of summoning, of drawing some kind of lines in some great proclamation, citing some long forgotten deity for power, whilst you plant your proverbial flag. Something that tells the reader whom ever they may be what the site is.
Thats at least what I thought. I suspect what I thought isn’t whats best. Sure, I could tell you that I’d be writing about some really niche topic like the influence of Luis Duigarre on photography, or the role of the church in suppressing the printing press. Which at some point I may because those are interesting topics. But that limits the blog and more importantly doesn’t reflect who I am. I try to be honest in my artwork, writing and making. I try to communicate feeling and reflect my inner world in some way.
So this will be a space cultivated for my kind of creativity, the kind of creativity I want to see in the world. I will share my research, reflection, short or long essays, journal entries, poetry, stories, process work and artwork along with anything else you might think of. It will be a space quintessentially me, to dive from and that starts from this very post.
In truth the start of this new year, though we’re already a few months (I’ve been ill sue me) a realisation hit me. In that it’s never a perfect time to start something. I think that society makes us think that we need it to be perfect to start but I figured I’d start anyway. My goal in this is to not limit myself and share my work here open and honestly. I don’t know how often I’ll update and the consistency of the type of stuff I am going to share… because well of who I am as a person. But what I do know is if you want honesty about creativity, technology and what it means to be human, then dearest reader you’re are in the right place.
So without further adeau. Hi, I’m Jonathan also known as Up A Tree. I jump from medium to medium curiosity led and ask big questions. I love looking at art and making art in whatever its form. I have a PhD looking at speculative futures and modern creative technologies but I also paint and use analogue tools. Oh! I also write prose and poetry too. So like I said I work with lots of stuff. This site will be a container for that and I hope grow into something more. But I guess we’ll see what happens but I know this post on it’s own is enough.
So, come walk with me let’s go on a journey, where I hope to find myself and maybe help someone out there find themselves too.
See ya soon,
Jonathan
